I Can’t Even Be Bothered to Write a Headline

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

I’M NOT IN the mood. I awoke this morning to the sound of former Partridge Family member Danny Bonaduce (now a DJ on New York’s Big-105) announcing over my clock radio that temperatures would top 100 degrees today.

It has rained part of the day every day for what seems like weeks.

My hair is frizzing, my office is so air-conditioned I’m storing frozen peas in my desk and my sinuses ache. Ah, summertime.

I’m not in the mood-for much of anything. I don’t feel like writing this column, I don’t feel like going outside to get myself a proper lunch and I particularly don’t feel direct responsive.

Maybe it’s the heat, maybe it’s the rain, maybe it’s the aliens tampering with my brain waves again. (Damn, I hate that.) I don’t know the actual cause, but I do know I haven’t given a catalog or mailing piece more than three seconds before file 13-ing it recently. I’ve stopped answering my phone at home to avoid telemarketers. And the closest I’ve come to e-commerce is bidding on a collectible on an auction Web site.

Am I alone in this malaise? Is anyone else’s buying mood dampened by a “cruel summer”? I would take a casual poll around the office, but frankly, I’m n ot in the mood.

And hey, maybe it’s just me. But truly, I’d love to see something so brilliant in my mailbox I’d risk heat stroke to run to respond.

What would that be? How should I know? I only write about this stuff. But I do know I haven’t seen much of it recently. Sure, there have been a few exceptions (like the Oldsmobile Intrigue/”X-Files” effort reported in our last issue). How about you? Any calls to action lately that made you want to, er, take action?

Let me know. I’ll be waiting here, defrosting my desk.
