Account-Specific Spotlight: Minneapolis-St. Paul

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Minneapolis is about as modest as a marketplace gets. Supermarkets here have the fewest health and beauty care, paper goods, beer, and books/magazines sections in the country. Stores are fairly spartan with laundry supplies, cleaning supplies, and frozen foods departments. And Minneapolis grocers don’t do much with double coupons, frequent shopper programs, or aisle markers.

Independent stores control 53.2% of the market’s total sales volume. Indies are smallish in size, with few services and lots of small sections.

Wholesaler Supervalu dominates with a 49.7 share, serving 158 stores. Rainbow Foods has grown to a 21 share with 37 stores, up from a 17 share in 28 stores five years ago. Wholesaler Fairway Foods is down to a 9 share from nearly a 13 share in 1994.
