IN THE NEWS

Experian Buys Web Data Firm Hitwise
The Web marketing services agency Hitwise has agreed to be purchased by credit reporting and consumer data firm Experian Group Ltd. for $240 million in cash, the two companies announced yesterday.

New York-based Hitwise accumulates and analyzes Internet usage data and uses that analysis to target the interactive marketing efforts of its 1200 clients, which include Google, eBay, MTV, Ikea, Ask.com and Quantas.

Hitwise gathers data from more than 900,000 Web sites in more than 160 industries. Such data excludes personally identifiable information and is aggregated into socio-demographic marketing segments.

It collects data on keyword searches, Web page views and other information for about 25 million consumers through agreements with Internet service providers. Information sourced from ISPs is overlaid additional demographic, lifestyle and behavioral data.

Companies can use the data to benchmark their Web performance against competitors and the industry standard in market share, time on site per visitor, and visitor profiles. Advertisers can use the data to optimize online search marketing and ad delivery.

Experian gathers and offers consumer behavior and preference data. The company’s Marketing Solutions division includes Experian Marketing Services, e-mail agency CheetahMail, and Simmons Market Research.

The Hitwise acquisition “continues the process of re-positioning Experian’s existing Marketing Solutions business, taking us where our clients are going as they switch more of their advertising spend online,” Experian CEO Don Robert said in a Web conference announcing the purchase. “It brings us new, unique data and brings us analytical services which complement our existing activities.”
