Circulation Marketer Dan Capell Dies at 64

E. Daniel (Dan) Capell, died Jan.11, at his home in Barnegat Light, NJ after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 64.

Capell had been a leader in the magazine circulation and direct marketing industry for more than 40 years,having held senior posts at Time Inc., Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and Inside Sports.

He was also president of The Lake Group and co-founder of Gruppo, Levey and Capell (now Gruppo, Levey & Co.). For the last 28 years he was the editor of Capell’s Circulation Report, a newsletter which tracked the consumer magazine publishing industry.

In 1996, he was inducted to the Direct Marketing Association’s Circulation Hall of Fame.

Dan was raised in Hamilton Square, NJ. After college, Dan lived in Brooklyn Heights, NY, Tenafly, NJ and Ridgewood, NJ. He also lived in Washington, DC.

He is survived by his wife Kathy, daughter Kay, son Matthew and daughter-in-law Vanessa. He is also survived by his sister Nanette and husband Dick Schwing; and sister Carolyn and husband Dick Wilkinson.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, Jan. 22 at 5:30pm at Annie Moore’s, 50 East 43rd Street, NYC.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers support for the construction of a rose garden which Dan requested be planted in his memory.
