Marketing Advice from “Rising Stars”

Posted on by Beth Negus Viveiros

Chief Marketer recently asked four of the 2014 Marketing EDGE “Rising Star” honorees for their thoughts on building a marketing career and the types of creative that get their attention.

Marketing EDGE (formerly the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation – DMEF), a New York-based nonprofit, works to train and develop the marketing talent pool through education, career development and job placement.

Best creative you’ve seen this year: As a Belgian living abroad I need to go with the “epic split” performed by Jean Claude Van Damme for Volvo Trucks.  Incredible performance, beautifully shot.  Real clever way of showing stability of the truck.  And 74m views!

Advice you’ve give a newbie marketer: This may sound counter intuitive but don’t worry too much about your career during the first few years.  Focus on building the skills you need for success later on.  Horizontal moves are more important than vertical moves in the early stages.

Marketing media that makes you respond best: Any medium can grab my attention as long as the message is relevant to me as an individual.

Describe your dream gig: I really enjoy what I do today.  I get to combine my love for data and creativity and work with some of the brightest people in the industry on some of the world’s greatest brands.  I do sometimes miss the early days in my career when I was a data analyst.  There was something really gratifying about writing code and cracking a tough analytical problem.

Best creative you’ve seen this year: My current favorite is a fantastic branded video focused on building girls’ confidence. It challenges stereotypes and takes the viewer through a range of emotions—and, in doing so, does a fabulous job connecting viewers with the brand.

Advice you’d give a newbie marketer:
Embrace seeing things from other perspectives. Great marketers are laser focused on their target and constantly seek to understand what motivates them, what they value, how they like to communicate.

Marketing media that makes you respond best: Innovative executions in either online media or social. I love seeing marketers take risks and pioneer where no other companies have gone before!

Describe your dream gig:
I feel pretty lucky to do what I’m doing! I also think it would be amazing to consult or lead a growing small business in crafting their marketing and creative strategy.

Best creative you’ve seen this year: I love the ‘IF WE” series of print ads that Dassault Systems has done, including the underwater skyscrapers. I’ve seen them in the Economist and they always get me daydreaming about the future.

Advice you’d give a newbie marketer: I would strongly recommend practicing writing in several styles, I find that young marketers lack a mature writing style coming out of school. I also recommend getting familiar with Excel and with analytics in general.

Marketing media that makes you respond best: I love and have always loved print advertising in magazines. Each piece is like a bit of art that I can, and have, ripped out and put on my wall!

Describe your dream gig: I would love to run a big marketing campaign for the Khan Academy that would attract mainstream American teenagers.

Best creative you’ve seen this year: There are many.  The most would be a car TV ad showcasing the story of a young couple and a puppy.  Why?  Because creative aligned to an emotional benefit and a story are made to stick.

Advice you’d give a newbie marketer: Marketing is both science and art.  Above all, it’s about numbers.  Be a data-driven marketer with a good balance between analytical rigor and experienced intuition.

Marketing media that makes you respond best: To just catch my attention, it would have to be something innovative or cool or something that I am actually looking for.  So, probably any online media ad tied to some kind of re-targeting execution.

Describe your dream gig: I have a passion for marketing and academia.  So, to teach marketing and to conduct academic marketing research would be the one.
