DMA:2010 Coverage Round-Up

Posted on by Beth Negus Viveiros

Miss any of our DMA:2010 coverage? Here’s a recap with links to all our stories (along with a few random observations):

1. Keynotes by new DMA CEO Larry Kimmel and rock star Bret Michaels kicked off the main conference on Monday. Kimmel got high marks all around for hitting the right notes in his opening address, and many attendees were pleasantly surprised by Michael’s marketing acumen. (I couldn’t track down a bottle of his Snapple Diet Trop-A-Rocka to try during the show? Could you?)

2. Speaking of Kimmel, Direct’s Richard H. Levey talked to him about the association’s recent financial reports. Richard also had a chance to sit down and talk to DMA board chair G. Steven Dapper about possible upcoming changes and challenges to the association.

3. The Wednesday keynote by Sephora global chair and CEO Jacques Levy left attendees looking for more. While the Frenchman clearly knows his brand, he shared precious little about the cosmetic titan’s online strategy, as promised by the session description. In short, it wasn’t pretty.

4. Medicare insurance marketer Highmark gave a great session on how it was able to more than triple its direct mail volume and cut its acquisition costs by 63%.

5. Think marketing is full of crap? Or is it CRAP? Lauren Brenner explained why during a session on creative.

6. Jay Schwedelson shared what’s working and what’s not in email today during a session where he used group discounter Groupon as a prime example of a site that has it right.

7. Has social media made listening “the new black?” Mark A. Chaves of SAS Institute covered how many marketers aren’t making the social world work in a tangible way yet. And here on our blog, Sherry Chiger ponders whether marketers were spending too much time thinking about social at the event.

8. My hometown team the Boston Celtics represented with very interesting session on its Facebook marketing strategy, which helped increase it email database by 20%

9. I had a chance to catch up with many friends at the show, including my colleague here on the Big Fat Marketing Blog Grant Johnson, who reflects on the show in this post. Richard Levey shares his nerdy chat with Jay Schewedelson here.

10. He didn’t bring Geoff Peterson or any puppets, but “Late, Late Show” host Craig Ferguson still did a fab job hosting the ECHO Awards ceremony. (He even talked about the event on his show Tuesday night. How did he figure out all direct marketers are vampires?) Spanish agency Shackleton nabbed top honors at the awards.

11. Also honored at the conference were Howard Draft and Rance Crain, who were named to the DMA Hall of Fame.

Great name for a digital asset management company, but I felt bad for the poor guy dressed as a beaver. Somehow, I don’t think he expected the 80+ degree weather when he signed up for this gig.
