American Online is searching for the next music superstar via a new online reality show, The Biz, that lets contestants compete for a chance to run a record label.

AOL is teaming up with Warner Music Group to launch the new show at Thebiz.com. Starting today, the site will unveil 50 contestants selected by AOL from a pool of more than 9,000 candidates. The site will include biographies, photos and personal statements from the hopefuls.

Judges will reveal the top 20 candidates on Sept. 15 when the interactive competition begins. Each episode will be available on demand and is open to all Web users— of AOL’s recent push to draw in the Web audience at large, an AOL spokesperson said Tuesday.

In The Biz, contestants will vie for a position as president of a newly created Warner Music Group record label. Ten finalists will travel to New York City this fall to participate in an interactive, online competition.

Chevrolet has signed on as a major sponsor of the show. As part of the sponsorship, the Chevy brand will receive prominent brand placement where The Biz is promoted via the AOL service, AOL Instant Messenger, and AOL’s entertainment properties.

The sponsorship runs through Nov. 30. Internet materials support.
