HOW WE DID IT

The Promo 100 ranking is based on three equally weighted factors: U.S. net revenue, two-year growth and the quality/results of campaign work.

Agencies reported their U.S. net revenue for the most recent three years, as verified by an outside auditor or a copy of the agency’s tax return. “Net revenue” is the same as “gross profit” as reported on tax filings; it does not equal total billings, which often include pass-through expenses. We usedU.S.-only net revenue in order to more accurately compare all agencies.

Promo estimated net revenue and growth for agencies that can’t give financial data because they’re owned by holding companies governed by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Those estimates are marked with an asterisk.

Agencies submitted three campaigns from 2006; Promo editors rated them on strategy, execution, creativity, scope of the work (both breadth of disciplines and number of markets) and, most importantly, results. (Confidential results are used only for scoring and are not reported in Promo.) Agencies that showed strong results for a range of clients using a mix of disciplines tended to score highest. Agencies with unclear results or limited work (all for a single client, or in few markets, or with a narrow range of disciplines, such as sampling or online sweeps) scored lower.

Scores for U.S. net revenue, two-year growth and campaign work were added together to arrive at an agency’s total final score.
